Resilient Digital Infrastructures for the

Swiss Healthcare Sector

In healthcare organisations, network environments and communication applications have long been regarded as critical infrastructure. Their availability makes a significant contribution to ensuring the provision of patient care. Their security and resilience are therefore essential for the smooth operation of hospitals, specialist clinics, and care facilities.

At SPIE ICS, we recognised this at an early stage and, together with our technology partner Cisco, have developed specialised solutions for the healthcare sector over a number of years.

The Challenges

Digital Infrastructure in Healthcare Organisations under Pressure

IT teams are expected to guarantee 24/7 system availability, manage multi-vendor environments, and respond to increasing cyber threats. At the same time, the regulatory and strategic landscape has become considerably tougher: infrastructure decisions have become matters of personal responsibility, as well as essential for the continuity of patient care.

Skills Shortage

54,400 ICT professionals will be missing in Switzerland by 2033.
The healthcare sector is particularly affected. Maintaining internal service teams is therefore becoming increasingly difficult.

Cyber Threats

Over 29,000 incidents were reported to the Federal Office for Cybersecurity (BACS) in the second half of 2025 alone,
including notifiable incidents from the healthcare sector. Such incidents can severely compromise patient care: operations may have to be postponed and patient records may become inaccessible.

Responsibility

Up to CHF 250,000 in fines may be imposed on responsible individuals under the revised Data Protection Act (DSG) if they breach their data protection obligations. This also includes the duty of care regarding the security and resilience of the network technology employed.

Concerns & Reservations

We Support you in your Decision-Making

01

The alternative providers we are comparing are cheaper.

Simply comparing prices gives a false sense of priorities. The real issue is the difference between the cost of a first-class infrastructure that ensures patient safety and the consequences of network downtime or failures caused by low-cost equipment.

02

Our current provider is well-established – changing seems too complex.

Such concerns often stem from the idea of total replacement. However, our multi-vendor model allows you to take over your existing network initially and gradually migrate components step by step as part of your renewal cycles.

03

We currently have no budget to outsource network management.

Most healthcare organisations already bear these costs, spread across internal IT teams, overtime, and unplanned “fire-fighting” operations. Our managed service transforms this into a structured and predictable model that grows alongside your organisation and relieves internal teams, allowing you to focus resources on clinical priorities.

04

We do not yet use AI applications or functions in our clinical operations.

AI already plays a significant role in cybersecurity. AI-driven automations and workflows will also considerably influence patient care in the future. This technological development needs to be considered with every renewal cycle so that its benefits can be fully realised.

The Next Step
