SMART CITIES ARE THE CITIES OF THE FUTURE

In order to respond to the sustainable development goals laid out by the environmental charter, it is vital that we drastically reduce our energy consumption. To achieve this goal, administrations in major cities must monitor all of their various flows (energy, transport, water etc.).

Increasing population density, the overloading of urban networks (roads, public transport etc.), and the need to stimulate growth whilst taking sustainable development concepts into account will all pose great challenges for the cities of the future.

An intelligent city is an opportunity to redefine the world in light of the challenges of resource management. SPIE’s mission is also to make cities more convenient, pleasant and responsible. The company works constantly with public and private stakeholders to promote sustainable urban planning and mobility, reassess urban development and interactions between the various parties involved (inhabitants, companies, governments) and make the city a pleasant place to be. SPIE is putting all of its expertise to work to achieve the vision of redefining the city’s mission.

By definition, an intelligent city uses technology and innovation to enable better management of natural resources and reduce our environmental footprint. It uses a variety of means to do so, such as developing connectivity in urban services (the ‘connected’ city), an intelligent communication and electrical distribution network (smart grid), and a clean and intelligent transport system.

The need to prioritise transportation using non-carbon energy sources means that electric cars form a particularly important part of the development strategy for intelligent cities. SPIE designs and produces innovative and efficient solutions which meet all of the requirements of future cities (reduced CO2 emissions, attractiveness, economic competitiveness) with a high level of technical skill. Bicycle station networks, an electric car charging structure for public and private fleets, telecommunications and high-speed networks, urban lighting, positive energy buildings (i.e. very low power consumption) – SPIE is constantly innovating to make the cities of Europe more intelligent.
